Extortion (1977-1978)

Original Members:

Steve Gouthro '80: keyboards, lead vocals
Scott Young '80: guitar, vocals
Bryan Mealy '79: bass, vocals
Darren McDermott '80: drums

The four members of Extortion were members of the Coronado High School Band. Steve and Bryan were trumpet players, Scott was a trombone player, and Darren was a percussionist. This band played at the Coronado HS Hi Jinx, a couple of parties, and a couple of Coronado church gigs. The members of Extortion were extremely cash-strapped and typically used one amp for both a guitar and vocals. They played whatever songs they had the sheet music for since they typically did not have the wherewithal to learn directly from recordings. They practiced at both Steve Gouthro's house and in the Coronado HS band room. Steve was well-known for his 88-key Rhodes electric piano, Scott for his blonde Fender Telecaster, and Bryan for his dark wood Rickenbacher. It was unknown who coined the name of the band but it may have been someone who actually paid to see the band.
